Case Study:
Operations Improvement

SNIM
SNIM is currently the seventh largest supplier of iron ore to the international trade market. Senior SNIM management wanted to understand how the knowledge of their staff compared to that found in an Australian Iron Ore operation and further, to identify where productivity was being lost and what could be done to improve the situation. A senior consultant was sent to site for a one month period to assess operations and implement changes as appropriate. This resulted in a number of positive outcomes:

	New communication and coordination systems resulted in better efficiency and teamwork across the different departments on the site.
	Site morale increased as a result of changes made and new practices were adopted and made the site’s own.
	Significant improvements in haul road condition resulted in better truck productivity and less tyre damage.
	Changes to waste dump construction resulted in considerably less dozer work required; and
	Staff generally have more information available to them to assist in making the best operational decisions.
